The above logo is an identity mark to distinguish organic products from non-organic ones supported with the tagline “Jaivik Bharat” at the bottom, which signifies Organic Food from India.
National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP)
Run by the Ministry of Commerce, India National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) was originally meant for international exports and follows strict guidelines. Under NPOP, there are 28 accredited certifying agencies that are responsible for the inspection of farms, storages, and crop processing units. The products that are certified organic by them then carry the ‘India Organic’ logo (see below).
These certified organic products are then exported to international markets. The entire procedure of inspection and certification requires thousands and must be renewed annually.
Participatory Guarantee System (PGS)
Meanwhile, local certification systems such as the PGS-India Programme have been implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Centre for Organic Farming (NCOF). Products from farms that are being converted to organic, temporarily hold the PGS- India Green logo during the transition period.
After conversion to 100% organic in three years, these are eligible for the PGS- India Organic Symbol.
There is no evident linkage between the two certification systems. International exporters do not process products with PGS certified ingredients because countries such as the USA and the European Union do not accept the participatory systems yet.
